Renewable Energy Club Proposal to the Student Government Association

 Dear SGA Members,

The Renewable Energy Club is proposing a “Concert from Conservation” campaign to reduce the consumption of heating fuel and electricity on campus with the incentive of a concert funded by a small percentage of the money saved from conservation.

Summary: An extensive awareness and educational campaign sponsored by the Renewable Energy Club with support from the Environmental Model Committee will strive to reduce electricity and heating use from last years consumption rate.  Twenty-five percent of this savings is proposed to go into a fund that supplements the Student Activities Council’s budget; the college could use the rest for other programs.  The Renewable Energy Club believes that the most effective way to reduce consumption on campus is through an incentive, and funding for the Student Activities Council would be an excellent motivation for the student body.  Promoting energy conservation with this incentive may greatly increase energy savings on campus.

Details:

  • Advertising: The Renewable Energy Club will be responsible for 300 poster size advertisements and 24 bi-weekly CONNtact ads. The Renewable Energy Club will also create and submit six half-page ads to the CONNtact this semester, with funding from the Energy Conservation and Efficiency Fund.  All ads will increase awareness of the campaign and offer methods for energy conservation.
  • Progress: Progress will be shown through a fundraising chart in Harris and Cro.  Monthly additions will show how much we saved in energy, money and carbon dioxide emitted.
  •  Calculations of Reductions: There will be month-by-month comparisons of electricity usage reduction from the November billing period through the April billing period. The electricity saved will then be priced at the current price for electricity in April.  Information on this will be provided by Physical Plant, calculated by the Renewable Energy Club and confirmed by the EMC.
  •  Distribution of Funds: From the total amount of money saved, 25% will go into a fund titled “Concert from Conservation” for use in one time events, and the College will retain the remaining 75%.

Notes: This incentive will supplement the current dial-down campaign and does not directly benefit from it.  The funding towards the Student Activities Council will come only from money saved through conservation, as this money would be spent on electricity otherwise.  The Renewable Energy Club would work with the Student Activities Council to decide where the money would go.
