What is this?

The background display is a scanning electron microscopy (SEM) image showing a section of manganese oxide thin film (pink) dislodged from a spin-coated film on glass (green). The view is edge-on, with the flake section adhering to the side of the glass substrate and standing perpendicular to the rest of the manganese oxide thin film (faint pink line on the glass substrate). The film is approximately 0.2 microns thick and the flake is roughly 5 microns across.

The SEM image was obtained (and colored) by Steve Hughes '02.
