CURRENT RESEARCH
Having ratified the International
Convention to Eliminate all Forms of Racial Discrimination
(ICERD) in 1994,
the U.S. government is required to submit periodic reports to the United
Nations Committee to Eliminate Racial Discrimination (CERD).
The U.S. submitted its first report in
2000 and its second report in 2007. I am currently researching the organizing strategies
of
U.S.
racial justice groups that opted to submit a counter-report to CERD in December
2007
in preparation for the US-CERD review
process, which took place on 21-22 February 2008 at U.N. headquarters in Geneva.
Preliminary assessment of the
2008 US-CERD review indicates that the NGO organizing efforts were extremely
successful
in holding the U.S. government
accountable for human rights abuses within the U.S..
