This year long project was an interactive, 3D animated children's story. It is about a young
elephant named Tembo who lives in Africa. He is migrating with his family because it is the dry
season and they are looking for water. However, while they are on their journey, a safari car
drives by and splits up their herd, leaving Tembo all alone. He then goes on an adventure to
find his family and ends up meeting many interesting animals along the way. The book was
presented on a touch screen monitor to allow for a more immersive experience. Any character
on the screen can be touched to trigger different animations
as well as the text at the top of
the page to have it read aloud. All the textures in the environment were also hand drawn
with colored pencil to create more of an illustrative book feeling.
This project was part of an exhibition at Connecticut College May 7-9th, 2009. It also received
the 2009 Connecticut College Ammerman Center for Arts and Technology Smalley/Zahler Award,
which is for the project that has "demonstrated excellence in the integrated fields of the arts
and technology and that successfully incorporated the highest degree of creativity, innovation, aesthetic, and technological understanding and appreciation for the integrative project."
