ARTIST STATEMENT: THE REASONING BEHIND IT
There are multiple degrees of separation between humans and computers -- the physical
and digital realm -- which in turn makes the experience of art very different for the
audience depending on what medium is used. Culture critic Walter Benjamin believes that
with the advent of technology and its ability to be mass produced, the sense of "aura"
(awe and reverence one experiences when looking at unique works of art) is lost and no
longer unique. In today’s world where everything is constantly becoming more digital, an
artist is faced with the challenge of how to make a unique piece of work and still use the
newest technology available. I love using the computer however, there is something
missing in the digital creative process that drives me to revert back to the physical realm.
The sense of achievement felt while constructing artwork with your hands to produce a
tangible object is not quite the same as when generating something using a mouse in a
virtual environment. For me the tactile process of creating is just as important as the final
product. Therefore, I have returned to using traditional, hands-on techniques such as
cutting out tiny holes in paper and painting on film that can not be digitally reproduced.
