CCLeft Budget Explanation

CCLeft was founded in October 2003 to balance the political spectrum at Connecticut College.  Through our first semester we managed to exist without funding through out-of-pocket contributions.  In our early stages we succeeded in establishing a following of students who shared a leftist political perspective.  We have been the first group this year to do so.  Currently there are 65 people on the group’s mailing list. 

An early accomplishment was staging a demonstration in and outside of the Daniel Flynn lecture; including passing out pie, informative flyers, and questioning Daniel Flynn’s perspective.  In doing so, CCLeft feels very much responsible for returning political fervor to the campus at large.  The group registered over 50 students to vote, at the CCLeft table in the O.V.C.S. fair.  We handed out flyers describing the current Democratic candidates and the dates of the primaries, as well as posting them in bathrooms across campus.  We will continue registering more students next week, at a table in Crozier-Williams Student Center. 

            The group has planned community service action, including Ocean Beach clean up and Food Bank volunteering.  On February 20, CCLeft will be showing Uncovered: The Whole Truth about the Iraq War for Connecticut College students in Olin.  

In our future endeavors we are requesting funding for the following:

• A registered domain name at http://www.ccleft.org in order to have available flyers, forums, club constitution, press, and contact information for club members and the public. CCLeft is currently operating a forum based website as well as a makeshift club website off of web space provided by Connecticut College. The group would like to register under an easily remembered name without putting burden on network bandwidth. 
• Materials including but not limited to environmental friendly spray paint, posters, markers, and bake supplies.  Approximately $85.00 has already been spent in the past on such materials as spray paint, T-shirts, pie-baking goods, poster board, markers, and flyer production.
• Photocopies for flyers, pamphlets, and posters informing the community of upcoming events.  Previous flyer production has relied on personal printers and library copy machines.  An estimated 300 copies have been made at ten cents per copy.  This does not take into account the flyers that were printed from personal printers.  CCLeft also plans to create and distribute a biweekly newsletter.  The audience for this newspaper will be the general campus and not just the members of CCLeft.   We have two options for printing: once every two weeks on the back of the Daily Conntact, a cost of 28 dollars per issue, a cost –effective solution, yet because of high demand for the back of the Conntact, this might not be a viable option.  The second option is to print the paper ourselves.  We estimate printing 500 copies per issue at 10 cents an issue at the library, a total semester cost of $300 as opposed to $168 using the Conntact. 
• Updating the CCLeft library. CCLeft’s library is a cornerstone of educating members within the group. Refreshing the group library will be critical.  In the last semester the group spent approximately $85.00 on books and movies for the library. 
• Transportation to upcoming events in which the group can involve the community (protests, rallies, symposiums, seminars, lectures, workshops).  This is likely to include gas money and bus tickets.  Individual members will be partially responsible for transportation costs.  One upcoming event that the group anticipates is the Pro-Choice rally in Washington DC on April 25^th.
