DIE-IN in Harris

16-NOV-2k4.

At approximately 6:00 pm on Tuesday night eleven CCLeft members swiped their cards and entered Harris dining hall dressed in black. Upon placing a banner on the wall of Harris showing the number of American troops, coalition troops, and Iraqi civilians killed, the eleven protesters fell to the ground near the tray-dump window in a symbolic gesture to draw attention to the outrageous number of fatalities suffered in the occupation of Iraq. Demonstrators lay on the floor in silence for approximately one hour. CCLeft planned to demonstrate in an area that would draw the most attention and maximize our statement without interfering with the flow of traffic in Harris. Apparently Harris staff and Campus Security felt that our presence was a safety hazard, but rather than force us to leave, they erected a barricade of chairs and caution tape to re-route traffic around us. In several instances, Harris staff members personally stood in between irritated students and the demonstrators in the interest of our safety.
