The BOS(s) and Architecture Boot Camp

I recently started a program at Harvard’s Graduate School of Design called Career Discovery. I’m studying Landscape Architecture for 6 weeks of my summer. The first grueling two weeks are over. I almost did not make it. I’ve learned a lot, but am getting flash backs of Conn. Coll. finals everyday.

My Calling: Professional Landscaping?

I’ve just completed my fellowship at Trinity College and am headed to Boston Town USA for an Architectural Landscape program at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design.

I was lucky enough to be able to stop in at the One-Year-Out reunion of the class of 2007. Mr. Reilly clubed out Tansil Theater with classy lighting, great eats, a signature blue camel cocktail and Prez. Big Hig even came through. It was a swanky affair where I ran into peeps like HF Teammates Whitney Longworth and Yeslan Hernandez, my shoe shopping wizard Ally Glassman, studio ally (soon to be Boston ally) Amber Fitch and a few other faces. The next morning I was cheering on ’08 grads as they took the stage for the quick two minutes it took to grab the paper from His Higness.

About Being Famous

Over the weekend I exhibited at Broad Street Gallery in Hartford. CT. I showed alongside Mary Catherine McBrian, a talented painter, who will be earning her masters in French through Middlebury’s abroad program this coming year. She is the bomb! Folks from all my different circles in Hartford came through to the opening.

My Olympic Size Pool Full of Money and Response to Jenny

Jenny commented on my first post "The Beat Goes On". Read "The Beat Goes On", then read her comments and then read this post.

Hi Jenny. There is a Brazilian population here in Hartford, CT, where I live and work, and consequently there is an older and vibrate Portuguese population as well. These populations both exist in Danbury, CT. and are drawn to each other because of the language they share in common. I mentioned the Portuguese specifically because, as you mentioned, they have a longer history as immigrants in the U.S. and still decided to support the human rights of their Brazilian friends and neighbors.

Yes. It is immoral for business owners to take advantage of an economic situation were they are always able to boot legal workers in exchange for illegal immigrants who are often willing to work under harsher conditions for less money. Clearly this is a practice that needs to end. Understand though, that it is not the undocumented immigrant that is to blame, but the business owner that is immoral enough to make and let any employees work in inhuman situations and disregard basic human rights.

Keeping it Really Real

Well it’s all coming down to the wire in April. I have an exhibition of my art work this month (check below for dates, times and where), a fund raiser I’ve been working on since December, and both my current jobs end after April, which means I need to find a new job and a new place to live. A lot on the plate. But this past weekend I checked off one of those portions.

St. P-Day and Hartford USA

When you hear Hartford CT you probably think exactly what I do. Is there anything to do there? In a word…no.

But instead of one word I’ll use many…
ST. Patrick’s Day saw me returning from a weekend in Philly with the Bro. Obviously I had a good time in Philly. But Monday came, I was at work all day, working, and when I got out it was time for a few green drinks.

Swedish Pancakes and Hot Tempers

So I went to Ikea in New Haven. It was a very serious experience. I got there early for “Ikea breakfast” (who knew). Eggs, bacon, fried potatoes (pretty much Conn. Coll. food, but tasted a day older) and Swedish Pancakes. Which are apparently a hit. While I was waiting in the cafeteria style line with the other early shoppers this one lady was yelling at the Ikea staff. “Where are the pancakes! There’s no pancakes!” she was screaming from the little service island to the back of the cooking area 15 feet away. “There’s no more pancakes!” The service lady, who was doing her best with a near deaf old guy (who had detailed questions about Ikea cuisine) was telling the yeller that the pancakes were made “fresh” and would be out any minute. This woman yelled about her lack of pancakes until a guy came from the back carrying a tray five minutes later.

Swedish pancakes…a really big deal.

The Beat Goes On

I’m at work…and decided this would be a good time to throw down my first entry. Most of the time I’m running around being arty, but last Wednesday I attended a rally for immigrants’ rights in Danbury, CT. were some 4000 Portuguese and Latino immigrants gathered in front of the city’s municipal building to protest the passage of a controversial bill allowing the city police to be trained to assist ICE (the federal immigration police). Blurring the lines between the immigration task force and everyday law enforcement. Needless to say people fall on all sides of issues dealing with immigration and Danbury, CT, oddly enough, has become a focal point of the discussion.
