The Ultimate Sevilla Experience!

One of the first things we learned upon arriving here in Sevilla almost four months ago was that there is an intense rivalry in the city when it comes to the fútbol world. They weren't kidding! Here in Sevilla we have Sevilla F.C. (futbol club) and Betis, two of Spain's best teams. Now, not that I've become a die-hard fan, but why anyone would be a Betis fan is beyond me! Sevilla F.C. is currently #1 in the country! And I just so happened to finally make it to a game last night!

Los Pueblos Blancos

Andalucía, the province in which Sevilla lies, is home to breathtaking things - festivals, the coast, a gorgeous accent, and amazing people. This past weekend, Professor Hybel introduced us to Los Pueblos Blancos, the all white towns that speckle the province. For two days, we traveled throughout these towns, taking in their beauty, relaxing, and enjoying the fact that, as SATA students, we have the opportunity to just spend time with our professor - an irreplaceable part of the SATA experience.

Two Spring Breaks, Just Like Conn!

In addition to the 11 days off for Semana Santa, university students in Sevilla get another 12 days off for Feria, Sevilla’s April Festival. Which clearly meant that a trip to las Islas Canarias (the Canary Islands) was in order! Now, only a day after arriving back in Sevilla, all I can think about is the beauty of Tenerife, my new (and third or fourth!?) “home away from home.”

They Kill the Bull!!?

Apparently I had never really thought very much about bullfights – to be perfectly honest, I had no idea that they kill the bull at the end of the fight! Luckily, I did learn that before actually going to the ‘corrida del toros,’ (bullfight) but it didn’t really help to diminish the shock-value of the moment. My stomach still turns when I think about it. And yet, just like Semana Santa, it was truly one of my most amazing Sevilla experiences.

Semana Santa in Sevilla

DSC02793.JPG

Nothing is as crazy as thousands of people, hundreds of pasos, and 2-hour long buffer zones of time being necessary to make it where you’re trying to go! That, my friends, is Semana Santa (otherwise known as Holy Week), in Sevilla.

Living with a Family…That’s not Your Own.

Sleepovers when we were younger was always interesting. I remember laying in my sleeping bag, listening to my friends’ families going through their morning routine – it was always interesting that some people turn their coffee makers on after eating; some read the Sunday paper in silence; others squeeze fresh orange juice. Some parents make breakfast for their children & guests; others let their kids make a complete mess in the process of cooking up a few pancakes. I always thought about what it would be like to live with a family that did things completely differently from how my family functioned. I never would have thought the opportunity would have come. Especially at the age of 21…!
