summer sprout! internship

with FRESH New London

Where?

  • The most of the time is spent working with FRESH in New London and the surrounding community.
  • When not working for them, time will be spent tending to the Sprout! Garden on campus

What will you do for FRESH?

  • FRESH = Food Resources Education Security Health
  • Possible positions: Assistant Manager under Laura Burfoot, farmer, and/or crew leader
  • Learning: you will learn about the 5 issues that FRESH tackles and how to teach the skills you learn to high school age youth
  • Do: farm, teach youths about the 5 issues that FRESH tackles, and how to apply them
  • Participate in: public meals, cooking, and the mobile market

What will you do for Sprout!?

  • Use the organic farming knowledge learned from FRESH and apply it to the garden
  • Maintain the garden by weeding and watering
  • Harvest vegetables and herbs
  • Distribute vegetables to Dining Services and Fiddleheads
  • Work with Jim Luce who would serve as an on-campus advisor for the garden

Typical week?

(Not less than 50% of time spent with FRESH will be working at their garden)

  • 2 days at Waterford Country School “outdoor classroom” working with youths at the garden.
  • 1 or 2 days harvesting
  • 1 day Mobile Market
  • 1 floating day
  • Free time spent at Sprout! Garden
  • Intern will be reporting to Arthur Lerner, Director of FRESH New London
  • Intern will work a total of 320 hours.

Skills Learned:

  • Organic agriculture
  • The 5 issues important to FRESH and to Sprout!: Food Resources Education Security Health
  • Teaching high school students
  • Leadership

Additionally, the intern will complete a proposal prior to internship following CELS guidelines.
